Hello again,

Can anyone explain how EDP bill electricity?  We had a stay of under a week in January yet we are being billed €167...?

Pretty much the same as anywhere - a combination of standing charges and usage.

If they haven't read your meter, you'll get an estimated bill for the usage element and you'll need to check against the meter for accuracy.

Do you have any idea what's on the actual bill or are you going by a debit from your bank account or something?

I know on my account that January is the month when they make 'corrections' to my account, if I owe them (or they owe me money). Is it possible that during the year you have underpaid a bit and this is the corrected annual update?

Check the plan you are on. We are on the simple plan and made sure we had access to the portal when they turned on our power. We entered the reading at the end of the month since we moved in mid billing cycle which is every two months.

You probably have the e-redes meter so get familiar with reading it. The portal shows you the types of meters and how to read them.

@jonesdn2020 @aspidistra @x-camone  Hi all, problem is we don't live here, so no reading of electricity meter possible.  We rent out the apartment which is occupied mainly from April - November each year.  Rest of the time empty as is the seasonality of Lisbon.  I think I will pay EDP a visit at Loja Cidadao...

@sff Well that probably explains it then.

For some reason, from your original post, I thought you had occupied the otherwise empty place for a single week but if it's something you rent out then the usage won't necesssarily match what the probably estimated bill usually says. You say you can't read the meter - fine, but under these circs probably irrelevant. I expect EDP have, recently.

I'd go with aspidistra's explanation. You've had estimated bills and it's catch-up time. They tend to read meters very rarely here these days. I've just sent in a reading as ours was out after not having been read since April last year (nothing drastic (only about 20€), but I don't want it accumulating).

@x-camone I thought my estimate was a little high when I entered my readings the other day. It showed €120 usage and €150 bill. We were here every day and it certainly has been colder than last year.

I remember a EDP email about a rate increase so I will wait until the bill arrives and dissect it.

Not complaining about at a €150 bill for 62 days that have been colder than it was last year. I know we have been running the heat longer to stay cozy.

I wonder if you can request a smart meter? Handy when you are not there much, when my electrics were upgraded my meter was upgraded so I can go online now and see what was used when. I don’t know if you can ask to have one or if it is up to them to choose who gets one.

I did try to use an app that goes with it to look even more closely at the usage but the app won’t work outside Portugal.
