In late April, Reabilitejo will be providing a webinar for ExpatsPortugal, focused on its mission to help people take better decisions when buying and restoring older property in Portugal.

We'd like this to be focused on what the ExpatsPortugal Community most wants to hear about.

If you are considering buying, or have already bought, an older property here, with a view to restoring it, do drop us some short thoughts re issues you'd like to hear about, in the comments here, or drop us a line at info@reabilitejo.pt with "ExpatsPortugal Webinar" in the subject line.

We can't promise to cover everything, or respond to issues very specific to individual properties, but we'll do our best to cover the themes that matter most to you.

Of course, if we can provide specific support regarding a property you have in mind, do reach out via that email as well!

This thread has now closed, to allow for preparation of the Webinar - please email info@reabilitejo.pt if you have more input, or would like to discuss how we can help you!

  • Is there anything that you need to do to change the use of outbuildings? So if you wanted to convert an old animal shed to a holiday let studio for example
  • What processes we need to be aware of and how to approach them
  • Finding reliable builders
  • Connecting services
  • Solar panels
  • Where to get materials

I think that's all for now! 😂

@beryl_the_peril thanks!  Yes, we can certainly address these points - and if we don't get through everything on the night, feel free to reach out to us afterwards!  We appreciate your input!

- insulating an existing structure: options, costs, methods, materials. Situations or structures where simply not possible or advisable

- heating solutions.  Possible options,  costs of installing different types of central or zoned heating.

Permits required for both of the above.

@jeanne OK, yes, for sure - thanks for suggesting them!  As with all the suggestions, can't promise to cover 100% of your specific needs, but we'll do our best!

Hello!

Hopefully these questions and their answers might also be of interest to others.  Thanks for asking Thomas, and we look forward to the webinar in late April!

Q1: Some basic information about zoning would be helpful.  We have heard "urban" and "rustic" thrown around to describe zoning that impacts if/how/what you may build in rural PT, but have not found any reliable explanation of what they actually mean (if they are even being used accurately) and what they allow/disallow, how rigid they are as zoning categories, what the caveats are, etc...

Q2 (a bit related to zoning): Is it possible to gain permission in more rural areas to do projects like converting old farms into yoga/wellness retreats, or artist communities (with a small number of cottages for visiting artists, for example), or other similar live+work style situations? We hope to move to PT and contribute to the economy and put our interests and passions to work supporting the beautiful culture and people. In that vein, we have seen some properties that have given us some exciting ideas of how we might do that, but we're not sure how realistic any of the ideas are from a real estate and zoning/permissioning perspective.

@sunil Absolutely - this dovetails with another person's questions, I think, and whilst there are variations and specifics, we should be able to cover an amount of this for you!  Thanks for the input!

Thomas,  I agree with what everyone has already stated.  Definitely looking forward to this webinar to see if this is an option for us!
