Q1

Supermarkets in the UK go about in this order for price and grade…

Waitrose

Sainsbury’s

Tesco

Co-op

Asda

Aldi

Lidle

What order would you put the Portugal chains in comparison to the UK equivalent?

E.Leclerc

Pingo Doce

Continente

Auchan

Intermarche

Minipreco

Aldi

Lidle

Q2

At which supermarkets can I find a British section? I heard some of the larger stores have this but so far haven’t been able to find British produce section.

I'm not sure you can grade them on price in the same way as in the UK. Some are cheaper for some things, others for others. Plus they all have different offers at different times. Plus they vary by store as a lot are franchises.

I personally shop at all the ones we have in town (Alcobaça): Continente, Intermarché, Pingo Doce, Lidl, Spar. And when we go to Caldas or Leiria we usually call into Aldi or E Leclerc. I especially like Aldi's vegetarian range.

The budget supermarkets are Spar and Minipreço and tend to be smaller.

The only place I know with a dedicated British section are the Lavrador chain of supermarkets we have on the silver coast who have concession shelves from Best of Brit. Our Continente has a foreign foods section and Lidl and Aldi have British weeks from time to time, other than that, products are just mixed in with everything else.

What is it specifically you're looking for? What area do you live in?

@pamalcobaca Thanks Pam I've never heard of Lavrador. I'll have a look.

Hi there Luise, in Central region a few of the larger Intermarché stores occassionally have an end-of-aisle for Brit food items but the range is very eclectic (Dutch pickled onions, gravy granules and Patak's curry sauces for example). If there is anything specific then a stocking-up shopping trip to the Algarve may be in order as there are quite a few niche stores that import UK items down there.

Hope this assists, PLL
