Most providers need you to sign a contract but you do have 14 days in which to cancel - especially if you decide not to install their system due to lack of signal strength. Ask the installation engineer to test the signal strength before they do any installation.

great suggestion - thank you.

We have a 1936 uk house that has been extended several times. Each refit introduced RSJ - steelwork that held up the building. These are dreadful for absorbing the rf from a wifi router.

We used the provided router in the utility room and got poor signal everywhere unless we were in the utility room. We used the original router to have all the correct settings to get the connection working.

We invested in 3 good mesh routers and even ran cat5 cables to each router. These all plugged into the original provided router. The 3 new mesh routers were doted around the house to provide 99% coverage in the house and deck area.

Thick granite walls or concrete with steel reinforcing is wifis enemy.

NB there are different rules for routers in different countries. Some allow for more bands and more frequency's.

At 2 minutes past midnight on Day 16 we received an SMS from vodafone saying that we needed to pay for further usage of the 15 day sim card. However, we still had vodafone internet (data) all day on Day 16. At midnight - another SMS from vodafone saying that continued use was dependant on payment then at 8mins past midnight - no data!

The outcome is that as an experiment the vodafone 15 day/€15 sim is worth having especially if you use a lot of data and have intermitent wifi access.

Hope this assists,

PLL

Here's a quick hack to see if the neighborhood has decent internet connections. Go on AirBnb, find rentals close to where you're planning to buy, and check their property details - a lot of hosts will list the speeds, or even post a picture of their speed test. Just to see what's possible...
