Who remembers the bonkers Brexit army suggesting that UK mobile phone operators would never reintroduce fees for EU roaming. The cost for setting up the charging would be prohibitive and it would not be in their interest.

Well, the gift that keeps taking is hitting once more. Most mobile companies in the UK are jumping onto the bandwagon to reintroduce roaming fees of about £2 per DAY. Not just for data but for calls too.

Plus the FAIR USE policy that was previously ignored is now being observed. Some companies will cut you off if away from the UK for as little as 2 months.

Has anyone found a loop hole to allow a UK number (Calls and SMS) to work in Portugal long term?

Has anyone tried xpatfone.com with success? (Its an app that works like Skype, or WhatsApp)

Ideally we would like to continue to have a UK phone number for calls and SMS from UK

We already have a PT mobile with oodles of data

I intended to keep my UK number but Vodafone UK are idiots and cut me off. To be honest I haven't missed it - I use WhatsApp to keep in contact with friends and family. Before going to any expense consider doing without maybe?

Any yes, Brexit is a big mess...

It’s a blinking nuisance for anyone who travels from the Uk. The only good thing is that from what I have heard people are at least warned that they are about to be charged more. I come over in periods of usually 2 months so am hoping to keep going by the skin of my teeth. However we do now have an ancient Pt mobile with a pay as you go sim for those occasions when only a Pt number will do.

Oddly we had come up against a brick wall with the fire service in terms of using a UK number. We wanted to register to have fires on my property and they wouldn’t accept our registration to do this online without a Pt number. Everything else, we got around with using WhatsApp and our UK number.
