Hopefully I will finally get to drive down from Santander or Bilbao to the Algarve later in the year. I thought it might be nice to make it into a little mini trip in itself. So what places/things are there en route which are interesting to stop and see, in Spain and Portugal or where are good towns to stopover in?
Of course there are several routes to do this, interested to hear anything about any of the routes, and any grim places to keep driving through, too!
In Portugal, and if you're not in a hurry, you can take the EN2 (Estrada Nacional 2), a slower and sightseeing road, with no tolls, that goes from Chaves (in the North) to Faro (in the Algarve).

We have travelled from both ports home to Portugal. Favourite stopping places include (but not limited to):
Burgos
Leon
Salamanca
Covilha
Estremoz
Evora
There are many other delightful places on the route but these are good as a start. We would suggest taking the non-toll roads for a more picturesque drive.
