Digital Switchover - Portugal – Going Out – Expats Portugal Forum

Welcome to the Expats Portugal forum!

Since 2005, this forum has had over 6,000 people sign up and take part in our community.

It is a place for people who want to move to Portugal and for those already living here to meet and share knowledge through our community.

With the recent revamp of the site, we have chosen to keep the forum on the website rather than create a social media group as we know there are people concerned about privacy and who owns their data. Plus there is a wealth of information from the years gone by that we did not want to lose.

But this forum is nothing without your input. So come on in, take a look around, ask questions and answer a few.

Hi,

Can someone please tell me when Portugal switched over to digital TV? We've just bought an apartment in "Paradise" and are moving out with our cats early 2019.

I lived in Portugal for 4 years from 2006 and whilst there bought a portable TV in 2008 which has been stored in a friend's garage (I knew I'd be back one day!!). Will it work? Will it just get Portuguese channels? Help!!

Any comments most appreciated.
Thanks
Lynne

April 2009.

You will need a cheap TDT box that has suitable output connections (e.g. SCART, HDMI, RF dependant upon your TV), and possibly a new aerial.

You will only get the main Portuguese channels - just 7 of them.

To get more you will need to subscribe to an internet or satelite package. Even so the number of English channels is very small.

Technology moved on a little - TV went digital in Portugal in April 2009. I would say ditch the old TV and treat yourself to a new one.
