Does Portuguese health insurance cover you while traveling?

Sorry to bother the collective but a question just came to mind. We are planning on moving with d7 visa in place next spring. Probably will also buy additional health insurance as well.

Question: we will have to return to the US for a month or so every year. If we have a health issue while visiting the US ( or any country ) will our Portuguese insurance “cover” our costs.

Health insurance is a big headache for most in the US (despite me working in health care 🙂 )so it weighs on my mind a bit.

thanks for any insight or personal experiences you might have/share.

Hi Gene,

When we got our quote from Millenium, we asked this specific question and they said yes, it is covered.  I want to say that it was good for 90 days while you were out of the country.  I could be misremembering, but I definitely remember that it was certainly a thing.

@hank_2021 excellent. Thanks for remembering to ask the question! That’s good news. I can’t wait to cancel my health insurance in the US. 🙂

@emergentt Yup, we asked specifically because we need to fly back multiple times a year to visit family.

As other commenter pointed out in the thread (@bert) make sure to ask your health care provider specifically.

I imagine it could also depend on the level of coverage that you end up getting.

A bit of clarification. That quote was for Millennium that Hank mentions. But if you have insurance from another insurer you better check. I know for mine that is not the case.

Hello,

In general, private Health Insurance made in Portugal covers you when travelling abroad for a certain amount of consecutive days. It may depend on the company and it can be from 30 up to 90 days.
What is more important to know is that it will only work in emergency/ accident needs and it will work as a refund. Meaning you will have to pay and then bring all papers/ invoices/ prescriptions/ reports, etc and ask for a refund.
The refund is not 100%. It is only a certain amount - it can be 35% to 50% or more depending on the insurance company and plan that you subscribe.
When traveling, it is always better to do a travel insurance for the period of your travel, which will cover you better.

Obrigada 🙂
Ana

@emergentt I'm afraid there is another issue to deal with for us US expats - the insurance in Portugal has low maximum limits per year, since health care costs are low, but it looks like those limits are WAY under potential bills in the US for major issues. I'm looking into ways to mitigate that, with add-on travel insurance - will update once I find out.
