I am 74, have been here nearly 14 years.Am very happy with the National Health Service. I have high blood pressure, and 5 years ago had open heart surgery. the operation and care was excellent. All residents are entitled to this care. If something is really urgent it is possible to visit private specialists for reasonable amounts of money.

Thank you for the response. What do you pay annually for this plan?

Hello @marianne and welcome to our community.

In my experience, it costs about Euros 40 to 50 to see a private General Practitioner. Non urgent appointments usually take 2 days. If any specialist follow up is required, you then have the option of seeing the specialist privately at further cost (about Euros 60 to 80) or you can elect to see someone under the National Health Service if you qualify.

Note, I live in Central Portugal and the costs may be slightly higher in Algarve.

Once you are a legal resident, you are entitled to access the National Health system.

You do not need to have private insurance to have a private consultation.

There are also low cost schemes where you can consult with a doctor online and prescriptions are emailed.

Hope this is helpful.

Best wishes

Gerry

@roy4eyes

Hello Roy,

Are you able to give me contact information for the insurance broker that you referred to? Thank you!
