My husband and I are both age 71 and currently live in the US. We're looking into applying for the D7 visa, and we understand that we need to show proof of medical insurance. Are affordable policies available for people like us who are over 70 with pre-existing conditions? What are the best resources to shop for such insurance?

@jmb contact Nuno at Winsurance.  They are listed in the business directory.  He can provide you with the information you are seeking.

Hello Misticjeff and JMB. My wife and I are in the same boat. We are planning to move to Portugal and are both in our 70's. We are just diving into both getting the mandatory temporary travel insurance for the D7 and private insurance.

Can you clarify the "directory" you are referring to? Many thanks.

@clarke In the top of this page, you see several columns, including one called "Business Directory". That is the one Jeff mentioned.

We received some information from Nuno's assistant at Winsurance. Unfortunately we learned the only insurance company that offers health coverage for people over age 70 (MGN) has very limiting conditions, such as a 360-day waiting period EVERY YEAR for pre-existing conditions and specific illnesses. There are also specific benefit maximum limits every year. This doesn't work for us, so we've decided not to pursue retiring in Portugal. We were very disappointed.
