Hi, my wife and I are visiting Lisbon to look at different areas around Lisbon for relocation.  Unfortunately our South African drivers licenses are not accepted by car rental companies and so we will need to use a mix of Uber and Public Transport to get around.

Does anyone know how available Uber is in Cascais and if there is public transport from Cascais to Lisbon?

Thank you!

Ian

There's a very regular train service between Cascais and Cais do Sodré -takes just over half an hour, trains at intervals of 12 minutes throughout the day and only a bit longer before 7am and after 10pm.

@ianmcshane we used Uber extensively all over Portugal, Lisbon, Cascais, Porto and Setubal. We found it cheaper than in the US, though some of the cars are a bit smaller, but that's true in general for Europe. Also, I believe Cascais has free public transport within the city.

Hello,
You can use Uber around Cascais area, and all over Lisbon greater area. Not a problem.

In Cascais municipality (all area up to Sintra and Oeiras) you can have free access to public transport if you live, work or study within the municipality.
You just need to fill out some online forms and upload proof of residence/ work/ study and you can have acess to the public trabsports. You get a card and you can also have the app on your phone to access the transports.

Also, for all greater Lisbon area, you can have a monthly pass for 40€ / month (20€ if you are over 65), that allows you to use all public transports around - trains, buses, metro, boats, trams, etc.
It is called Cartão Navegante / Lisboa Viva.

🙂

@anavieira  Is that 20E per month arrangement also available to visitors to Lisbon? By which I mean non residents. if so, how would I order such A pass?

@jeanne That pass is for residents (in Portugal) only.

You would have to go to a specific shop/metro/train station, fill in the forms, provide pictures, pay and wait a few days for the card, and then charge it/top it up.

Since arriving we have opted into using Uber a lot... It is relatively inexpensive if you are in the Lisbon area, we were staying in Almada for a while, but it does add up.

Living in Almada, I found using the tram to get to either the Pragal train station OR to the Cacilhas Ferry which is my preferred option.  There is a mobile app called TTSL which has a live feed of what ferry is leaving when and how full it is.  Excellent for timing that last drink at the a roof top bar 🙂

We have since moved to Palmela, just north of Setubal, and are using Uber.  Where we live there is no easy access to a bus or train stop.  We will be buying a car, but I expected as much when living in a smaller town outside of the main Lisbon area.

Currently an Uber into Lisbon from Palmela can be around €30 give or take... depending on time of day etc.  It can take 5 / 10 mins to get one... but we have had a few occasions where they just cancel on us after 15 mins.  Not ideal. Lucky for us, we are usually in no rush and plan this type of incident into our journey.  Hence the want for a car.

On a related note... Not having a car and being slightly remote means getting a big shop done can be tricky.  Initially we were Uber(Bolt) to the nearest mall (Almada Forum/ Setubal Alegro Mall) and then getting an Uber back home with all our shopping.  I now get Continente to deliver the big shops. A lot easier.

I hope such a travel card will become available to guests as well. In many other EU countries, the system of getting around the city is simplified for tourists. For example, you can easily buy such a ticket in Austria. Obviously, it's cheaper than Uber, but since the public transport discount is not available, I'll console myself that Uber's service is more comfortable, haha. What services other than Uber are available in Lisbon? Maybe there is a transfer service built on the principle of operation of manchester airport transfers?
