Moving House Plants from the UK to Portugal - Help!

Hello! We are looking to move to Portugal in the coming months and I have gathered a rather large collection of house plants in the past few years. My problem is I'm really struggling to find out what's the process of moving the plants from the UK to Portugal. My partner and I are happy to drive them in our car, but do they need plant passports post-Brexit? What is the process for this? They are purely for private use and will stay indoors but all the info I can find is for businesses transporting them and not just domestic!

Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Hi, to find out about details as a private individual email the following:

planthealth.info@apha.gov.uk

However it is a hugely bureaucratic and expensive endeavour, absolutely not worth the trouble. Much better to give away the plants to appreciative pals and enjoy all the new ones you can get and grow out here. Your houseplants will also have got used to growing in certain conditions over there and it will probably shock and kill a few of them to end up in a different climate and light conditions even if it is closer to what the type of plant likes generally, yours will be used to UK conditions.

I would say to anyone also don’t be tempted to just smuggle in a few bits and bobs. It is very tempting but phyto-sanitary controls are there for a reason, to prevent importing pests and diseases you may not even be aware are on your plants, in the soil they are in, or in their roots.

Enjoy all the wonders you can grow over here. A new start! Hope your move goes well.

I'm just starting to give away my plant collection as I know about the phytosanitary hassles! I highly recommend a forum called Underground Plant Trade https://www.freedemplants.com/ of course there are 100s of Facebook groups that you can sell them on.

Having seen all of the wonderful plants on the streets of Lisbon, I'm confident I'll be able to re-amass my collection in Portugal 😀
