Hi,

This is quite an unusual and long question, so not sure if any one can help!

My Husband & I lived in the Algarve and got our residencia and NI number etc. We had to return to the UK to look after a sick relative so had to give up the rental that we were living in. We have just returned to Portugal and are renting a house until we find somewhere to buy. Is it best to change the address on our documents now, or wait until we have found our new home?

Thank you

By law, you have to update your information, namely your adress, within 60 days of the change. I'd advise you inform SEF of your current adress, and the Autoridade Tributária (responsible for the NIF) when you buy your house (as long as you don't take too long to do it).

@antonio_f Thank you. It has been over 60 days as we got stuck in the UK due to Covid. Will this make our residencia invalid?

@schelle

Your residency could be invalidated if you have been absent from PT for a greater period than that which is permitted but due to covid I think they're currently being less strict about it.

Failing to notify a change of address is merely an administrative offence for which a fine can be imposed.
