We are concerned about the state tax laws here, one of 5 known sticky states. We have no family here and hope to be free of state taxes once moving to Portugal.
It's very worth looking into...you may always need to file a state return no matter if you live in PT. We left CA for the same reason with a year+ re-domiciling in TX before we leave the US to become expats, as CA is very sticky too. Perhaps you have a tax accountant to seek advice from. All the best!

@stone-karengmail-com I moved from CA without tax problems but I also am retired so I don't have income. If you are retired there shouldn't be a tax issue. It sounds like you are child-Free. I am also, and hoping to find other child-Free people to communicate with.
@lynnette Hello Lynnette, are you living in PT now and how long have you been over there? My partner and I have not yet moved to PT, still learning what we need to in preparation. @alleycat Hi Allie, I have been living in Uruguay for 6 years. I plan on visiting Lisbon and the beach areas for a week or so late June and probably moving to PT next year. Uruguay is quite nice, very safe..a big improvement from the USA, but it is pretty much all families here in the beach towns. I am hoping to find child-free beach communities in PT.
