Ok, we've booked the flights and we've booked the car and we are due to spend 10 days in Portugal over Easter(ish). Flying in to Porto (still some very reasonable prices considering its probably a 'peak' time.) from Liverpool. Just looking for some ideas as to an itinerary really, what did folks do to find their properties when they came a scouting?
We're probably going to spend our first night around Porto and may also visit my old haunt in Povoa the day after. We need to take in some of the North I suppose as there is a possible job in the future, and also need to look extensively around Coimbra/ Leiria as well. Also, will need to meet with friends in Sacavem and finally may have to hit the Algarve as well..........9 year old (to be) who likes Waterparks and doesn't like looking around ruins much. Unless, there are some waterparks further North than the Algarve.
So, come on folks. What did you do? How did you get on? What were the pitfalls? What really worked? Thanks in advance, for the millions of replies.

Hi
I think the most important thing is finding an area which you really like when you are over there. You could make arrangements before you go to view property and then waste a lot of time seeing houses in an area which isn't right for you.
I would say do a bit of sight seeing and try to find an area that you really feel at home in, go to the cafes, chat to people (how is your Portuguese?)
As you drive around you will see dozens of houses with Vende-se boards up outside. They will have the phone number of the Agent on them, so if you like them you can phone up about them. Most Agents have someone who will speak English.
Also search the internet before you go, there are quite a few people who specialise in selling property to English speaking people, but see what I said in the 1st paragraph about that! The ten days of your trip will fly past and you can't see all of Portugal in that time so try and work out before you go exactly where you want to go.
Good luck!
Lee
PS Agents are Agents are Agents....in every country they want to sell a house to YOU, best to do your homework first!

Well I would say that the most important thing is TIME the worst thing you can do is to cut corners and put yourself to a deadline.
We were lucky we plonked our self on Tomar campsite (now closed i am sorry to say) found a very nice estate agent (yes they do exist :o ) told him what we were looking for.
The man worked his little cotton socks off for the next four months a very honest man if he thought somebody was asking to much he would say so. We looked at over 50 houses a couple got the hart going a bit, but both times the family members could not agree on a price, in one case there 8 brothers. But in the end we found the house we now live in it was just four walls but we knew it was going to be our new home.

Thanks for the advice folks, a couple of pointers there. No massive hurry here really, as we plan to visit a couple more times at least before we take the plunge, so it doesn't have to be over and done within 10 days. I expect we will probably rent for a while before laying out our entire worth. Without wishing to cause offence to anyone else on the forum, but does anyone know any decent websites that advertise properties outside the beiras and algarve. Sophie and her colleagues have a fantastic site at Pureportugal and there are a number of others that cover the beiras, but it would be interesting to see in detail what is on offer closer to Lisbon for example, or around Porto. I can't find much that actually has any property in those areas and it would be heplful to make some comparisons.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi ithepider. If you click on my website link below and go to Bruxy Info, there is some information about avoiding the pitfalls when buying property in Portugal, which I have compiled from the experiences of friends, family and acquaintances. It is my hobby. I also have an article currently in the Portugal Magazine (Jan/Feb edition) and another article coming out in the next edition. Both may be of interest/help to you. The mag is on sale in places like WH Smiths. I also appear on a phone-in talk show in the Algarve called Straight Talk on Kiss FM. You can listen by Internet on their website. Best of luck but be careful and don't leave your sensible head at home.

By the way, if you have AOL you might not be able to gain access to my webpage, as they don't like my free hoster. If so, let me know and I will send you another link. I hope to have a "proper" website up and running some time in the near future.
