Hello

I've haven't found much information about this but generally speaking do most people get a survey done on the house before purchase and if so what kind of costs are we looking at?

Thanks
Sarah

Here in the Algarve, it doesn't seem to be normal to get a survey done. In fact, I have only known one person to do it before purchasing. He used an English guy out here and he charged him £350 GB Pounds Sterling.

Thanks Bruxinha

Does this mean that they are not required in order to have a mortgage?

Does anyone know if this is common further north?

Cheers
Sarah

Hmm...yes, having a mortgage could change things. I am sure you would need a survey done in that case.

However, I do know someone, who managed to get a mortgage from someone like Abbey for an "offshore" villa, which was illegally built and technically doesn't exist according to the plans. The lawyer acting as representative for the bank in Portugal signed the papers and they took what he said as true. As always be careful what you do. I have no idea about the centre and North but down here, "dodginess" is rife I am afraid.

Sarah - I had to take out a small mortgage for my des-res and the bank sent round a surveyor. From what I gather he didn't look for defects but mainly ascertained that the bank would get their money back if I were to default.

(I live between Lisbon / Porto - so central Portugal)
