Hi All -

My partner David Neville and I are planning to move from Highgate (London) to Portugal in September - assuming we're allowed to travel at that time. I think we're probably going to end up somewhere on the Silver Coast but we'll rent before we buy and make our decision once we've familiarized ourselves with Portugal and, of course, learned the language at least passably for everyday interactions.

We are committed to being part of the EU so we're leaving the UK and taking our businesses with us. David's company designs, builds and maintains websites for businesses of all sizes and I am an independent consultant financial economist with specialisms in UK and EU commercial property market analysis and risk management. I am planning to add climate-focused financial risk management to my services once I have finished my climate risk certification from the Global Association of Risk Managers. My clients are usually financial firms, institutional investors and industry bodies. And that's the professional side over with!

We love food (David's passionate about cooking and I love eating), we're wine enthusiasts (we can't wait to taste what Portugal has to offer), we love music (roots, jazz, folk, classic rock) and love it even more when it's live. We go to art galleries in London all the time and hope to continue the habit in Portugal. I'm also hoping there might be an English language book group to join when we have settled in a bit.

That's probably enough for now. We're looking forward to meeting you all!

Best,

Kate

@kate2020   Kate, if you get to the Algarve in your travels, please let me know. We have a regular ex-pat gathering at Jack's Pub in Albufeira just for chatting. And I could show you around a bit if you like.  Peggy

Hi Kate, what fascinating work you are involved with. I asked a serious question on the Good Morning Portugal! show this morning - 'Can the Portugal we know and love, survive?' - post-pandemic.
Would you care to join me one morning and add your view from your expert perspective?
All the best with your excellent choice and move BTW (-:

@goodmorningportugal Hi there from cloudy grey London. What are you after specifically? Comment on the inexplicable decision by the UK government not to green-light travel to Portugal without a 14 day quarantine period on return to the UK? I have only a vague idea of why the government singled out Portugal for this treatment. Presumably because the Portuguese national Covid-19 infection rate has not fallen much since May, while in neighbouring countries the rate continues to fall. Nevertheless, everyone who looks into the situation knows that the virus outbreak is very concentrated in certain Lisbon neighbourhoods and the Tagus Valley - and Portugal has had a lower death rate than many of the green/amber countries. Frankly, I don't believe that life will be the same anywhere in the world until there is a widespread vaccination program. Even with a vaccine, there is a 'scarring' effect that lingers in many people's minds leading them to be more cautious about travel among other things. Humans are not very good at assessing risk and tend to either over-estimate it wildly or underestimate injudiciously. I'm happy to come on your program if I can add any value. However, I'm not sure how many of your listeners want to hear from an economist specialising in risk who hasn't made it to Portugal yet. Up to you... BTW we have now booked our ferry tickets so see you in Sept!

@goodmorningportugal  I would be interested in @kate2020 views as an economist but maybe that is because I'm in financial services so I am wired (dull) that way 😋

Kate, on your point about humans not being good with assessing risk, I love Annie Duke's 'Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts🤑

@goodmorningportugal When and how would you like to do this interview? May I have your questions in advance? I'm used to speaking to audiences of investment professionals but I'm not sure if my musings will be tasty fodder for the wider expat community. However, I'll give it a go if you want...
