Hello All!  Living in Nazare for a month now.  Loving it!  Expat couple from Redondo Beach, California, USA. Looking for like minded souls to connect and get together with socially and learn more about the local Expats already living here.  Want to connect, explore, network and just grab a coffee and chat.  Please let me/us know of any groups or events or meet ups here in the local Nazare area.  Would be much appreciated!  Have local phone #'s and email along with this forum.  Cheers!  Milan

Hi Milan and welcome to the forums!

We were just in Nazare on July 21st. We are from Huntington Beach but we previously lived in Torrance on the border with Redondo.

There is a Silver Coast meetup on Wednesdays in Sao Martinho do Porto. You can find the info in the Events page.

We are in Lisbon and holding down the fort here for expats. We have quite a few good friends in the Porto area and we are all setting up a meetup for next month there.

There is also one being held routinely in Portimão.

Are you coming over on a D7?

Cheers,

Trevor & Shannon

@jonesdn2020 Hey Trevor & Shannon!  Great to connect here with you guys! That Wednesday meetup sounds perfect!  Right down the road.  AWESOME!  Yeah, we're here on a D7.  Our current SEF appointment set for December in Coimbra. My email milanbotica@gmail.com & mobile 914-113-639.  FYI 😉

@nazaremilan

We might have to do a repeat of our last month expedition. We met with friends in Porto and explored the area for a few days. We attended the Silver Coast meetup and met some friends before heading to Nazare. We stayed at Hotel Oceano in Nazare and had a blast at O Calabouco - Bla Bla bar.

Our SEF appointments are for the end of this month and are up the street from us in Lisbon.

Once we finalize the meetup schedule in Porto we can figure out our schedule and possibly swing by your way on the way up or back.

@nazaremilan Thought we should mention some lessons learned from the last seven months here.

We obtained local health insurance from these folks at a great price. Winsurance | Expats Portugal

We are using this company for transferring our USD to Euro. Spartan FX | Expats Portugal

We are using this US speaking company to facilitate our healthcare access and register us with the SNS. Serenity Care, Lda | Expats Portugal

We used our Premium Expats Portugal membership for a free consult with this tax accountant. All Finance Matters | Expats Portugal

This is something we all talk about at the meetups to compare notes and who is using which company for what. It is hectic getting situated and we compared prices and services before deciding on these companies.

We are so close to the finish line and will be on autopilot soon.

GREAT STUFF!

Thanks for sharing all the great info on resources.

I think for us on the USD to Euros it was Spartan & Wise.  We look at both before making our transfers to see the best rates/lowest fees per transfer.

Great stuff on the others as well.

Right now, we are looking to buy a car and are leaning towards the lower end until we are more settled.  A new car from a dealer seems to be the way to go for us.

Current choices are down to:

Dacia Sandero Bi-Fuel

Citroen C3

&

Hyndai i20.

Then we were looking at an outright full buy versus financing in the short term to establish credit.

We want to buy a place in the central PT area like around Caldas De Reina or maybe around Coimbra - but the summer fires are giving us pause about to much in the country around woods et al.

What did you guys do about a car?

Did you buy in Lisboa or on a lease like us in Nazare?

Anyway, winding it down for tonoght.  Going to get in some PT language tv programming to practice listening to the local lingo and then off to bed early tonight.

We are ABSOLUTELY loving it here in Nazare.  Yeah first month is still that honeymoon period.  Everything about this little fishing village including the surrounding area is just perfect for now.

Looking forward to meeting you guys soon if it works out.

Morning reading. We bounce between Spartan and Wise but Wise just raised their rates.

We were going to ship our car but since we ended up in Lisbon versus our initial choice of Lagos we sold it to carmax for a profit.

We looked at some lease deals or as they call them here rentals from this company. Pretty attractive.

ACP Automóvel Clube de Portugal | Expats Portugal

We are leasing in Lisbon and without the need for a car life is pretty sweet. We toured the country in the last 7 months here and finally decided Lisbon is home.

We are all too familiar with fires and avoid those areas. We lived in Corona on the edge of the Cleveland National Forest and had scares. We almost moved to Sierra Madre until the reality of fires set in. Then there are the mudslides after the fires.

We are using the local public transportation in Lisbon but mainly walk several miles a day. The buses and trains take us throughout the country.

It is a completely different concept than the US.

@jonesdn2020 Can I ask why did you have to weight for your SEF appointment for 7 months?

When did you moved?

@dance We came to Lisbon two weeks after our VFS appointment on Dec 15 since our apartment lease started on Dec 1. We flew back to the US in March to get our visa. Our visa expired in July and they had made our SEF appointments for the end of August.

So other than a 2 week trip to the US we will have been here for 8 months by the time we go to SEF.

@jonesdn2020 Thank you for that. Now I understand how time frame works if you rented your place before your SEF appointment.Did you sell your house before renting in Lisbon or after? We planning maybe to rent our house here and not selling at first. Thank you!

@dance We actually sold our home in April 2020. We needed the equity to become full-time digital nomads.

We spent over 18 months in the states visiting family members and touring the country before moving to Lisbon.

It was a nice way to do everything we couldn't accomplish while working and wrap up our life in the US.

In terms of quality, you might consider the Hyundai, if you think of the cost/efficiency, buy the Dacia, as the LPG is much cheaper (you can get it by €0,90/liter or less, unlike the gasoline/petrol).

Just my opinion...

And welcome to Portugal.

@antonio_f Hey Antonio!  Yeah!  Great opinion.  Really loved the bi-fuel option for precisely that option - AS WELL AS - the overall range by having two tanks to work with.  We are leaning to the Sandero for that very reason!  Thanks for the help and feedback.  Much appreciated.  Cheers, Milan 🙂

@nazaremilan If you buy the bi-fuel, I can give you some tips/clear some doubts, as I had one bi-fuel car until 7 years ago. And have a Dacia now...
