Hi Everyone! I would like to ask advice to those who bought properties in Portugal and what the real estate taxes are, and if they are increasing. I am interested in Algarve I am in Cannes and here there are 2 taxes plus a 3rd tax for foreigners like me (I am Canadian). And apparently property taxes will increase very quickly in France.Thanks! Christine

The IMT tax is payable when you buy a property - it varies depending on the value and type of the property from 0 to 8% of property value. Then there is stamp duty which is 0.8% of property value .

When you own a property you pay annual IMI tax to your local municipality. This is also based on the property value. There is a calculator here https://www.doutorfinancas.pt/simulador-de-imi/

@pamalcobaca Thanks! Interesting to see the other side of high income taxes - they seem to work out around 0.3% of property - the average in the US is more than 3 times that, and our worst states are over 6 times that.

@zoom And don't I know it. Mine are 5x what Pam's calculation site shows for the value of my house. Plus a slew of city "fees".
