I have just become a member and looking for some pointers on the Portuguese residency process and NHR programme before the curtain comes down on the Brexit Transition period.
There seem to be a lot of players who are happy to take a large fee to help - but if anyone has a guide to securing residency remotely that would be appreciated.
You cannot "secure residency" remotely as an EU citizen. It's a totally different (and far simpler) process to obtaining a residence visa for non-EU citizens but the whole principle is "reversed", as it were, in that you establish yourself as resident and then register the fact to formalise, and have officially acknowledged, your status.
You must be in Portugal for over 90 days, or with the intent of being here in excess of 90 days, in order to register your presence and obtain a certificate from the Câmara Municipal (town hall) in your area of residence in the first place. You would then need to comply with the allowable absences criteria for 5 years before you could apply for a document as a permanent resident.
NHR is a tax regime not subject to citizenship criteria, and is available to all new residents provided they have not been tax resident in Portugal in any of the preceding 5 tax years. As I understand it, obtaining the status is very straightforward and is done online.
