 Good morning,

I'm selling my house before I leave the U.S. and had a question. I'm thinking about using my home profits for a down payment and am stuck on the order of operations. Does anyone know whether moving from storage is something that can be done? Can I have a moving company move my things out of storage and then across to Portugal or will it need to be from my residence? Will this make it uninsurable?

We moved our things to Porto and they had to go into storage because the house was not ready. We had to pay for storage and insurance. 7 months later things are being delivered and moved into the proper rooms etc. you have like 8 weeks of shipping time if things go like clockwork, so maybe that allows you some breathing room. Customs might add a week or two also.

@vandfdavid yeah.. that helps.. I thought maybe they would have an issue insuring if the items were picked up from storage vs a house. I remember hearing somewhere that if the items were already packed up they wouldn't insure and wanted to find out whether that was true. I want to sell my house before this bubble bursts and would like to empty the house and do some cleaning up first (paint touch up, etc.).

@hillach08 we came from Chicago area and used Laser Moving. They packed everything since Portuguese customs required it. They took all boxes and furniture to their warehouse and located containers for the shipment. They packed the containers and organized the transport both to a US port and to the Porto port. They coordinated with customs and the Porto movers. Once past customs, it was necessary for us to store one container until the house was ready to accept the items. We paid for insurance for the shipment phase and then for the storage phase. The local movers have been very accommodating in delivering the one container and also assisted in unpacking boxes and furniture. Personally, I would get the plan together with the Us shipper to determine the best approach.
