My spouse is Portuguese and we have been married almost 14 years and he is now a dual citizen. We are buying an investment property in Algarve with likelihood of a more permanent home there or closer to Lisbon in a few years.

We once applied in the USA for Citizenship about 10 years ago unsuccessfully becasue I did not enough connection to Portugal yet (no property).

I see a lot of traffic here on D7 and Golden Passport (we will invest outside the Golden Visa zones) but nothing on any automatic residency then citizenship for spouse of Portuguese. My spouse thinks it would be automatic on application but I thought someone here would have experience.

Thanks, this is interesting information. I am curious that Portugal seems to refuse citizenship equally to people who are terrorists, major criminals or served in the military. That last category seems out of place. Is that enforced even for friendly military like the USA?

It doesn't automatically refuse citizenship to those who have served in a foreign military, it is merely one of the grounds that can result in a refusal to grant citizenship (one of the others being the lack of a connection to PT that you've already experienced).

I don't think they refuse citizenship to someone who has completed military service for a friendly (fellow NATO member) country. I am friends with an ex soldier (20 years UK) who isn't married to a PT citizen and he was granted PT citizenship.
