Is buildings insurance a legal requirement in Portugal or not?
I am getting conflicting advice from various quartets,banks,ins cos, friends etc

I am getting conflicting advice from various quartets,banks,ins cos, friends etc
Cannot believe it is a legal requirement unless the property is tied to a mortgage, in which case it will be insisted on in much the same way as in the UK.
When Tomar was hit by a tornado 3 or 4 years ago it tore through a number of houses and I remember at the time reading in the local paper that hardly anyone had insurance cover and as such they were launching an appeal to help them.
Not as far as I know, ie they can cancel if you have multiple claims, e.g. flood region.
Car Insurance being the exception.
Only key point if one is getting insurance, in my opinion, is that they are underwritten by Lloyds.
We have to have buildings insurance because we bought a flat (in Lisbon) and we have to show the insurance to the management agents each year.
