Having bought all the books on swimming pools , I eventually discovered the best book.... UK based. this is their introduction.
Welcome to the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) website. PWTAG is an independent, not-for-profit, membership organisation with the sole objective of raising standards in the quality and treatment of swimming pool water. www.pwtag.org
hope it is of some help to someone....

Interestingly I think things have moved on somewhat since the publication of a lot of this site (most seems to be 3 years old). The is an EU project away from the use of chlorine and specifically the use of chlorine in pools and public pools. Chlorine use in municipal water treatment is currently scheduled to finish in 2012. Indeed many public pools in Northern Europe (particulary Belgium and Holland) have already stopped using chlorine and replaced with safer alternatives. There is a University of Barcelona study with regard to the risks of chlorine and public health: American Journal of Epidemiology ; vol. 165, no. 2 : p. 148-156 http://www.eco-piscina.com/Bladder%20Ca ... 0Water.pdf

As you'll notice, I have a vested interest in alterntive products for water treatment, but this interest arose as a growing concern with regard to the health damaging properties of chlorine as a water treatment.

Simon,

chemical reduction is good,
I suppose a narrow pH that inhibits microbe growth is good, however it is achieved, e.g. blood pH is 7.35 to 7.45 for this very reason, bugs can't survive.... and whatever does survive e.g. H1N1 (swine flu) the body raises the temperature to kill them off :D

World Health Organisation also publish an excellent free book which can be downloaded on swimming pools.
http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_hea ... e2full.pdf

this would be considered gold standard by health authorities?
regards
kevin.
