UK or Spanish registered SIM card

Hi,

My UK bank uses text messages to send one-time passcodes for access to online services and authorising debit card purchases. It has just decreed that for this it will now only recognise mobile phones registered in the UK, Ireland, Spain or Gibraltar - needless to say, I don't have such a phone.

Before I delve too deeply into this, I wondered if anyone had any experience of getting, and then topping up, a Spanish or UK pay as you go SIM card.

Thanks, Steve

I have the same problem, and I guess the same bank. I have just ordered a Giff Gaff U.K. card over the internet, I am hoping it will answer the problem. I will post again with the result. I hope this change is not the beginning of the bank closing our accounts.

No that's not going to work. They are sending a card but you have to be in the U.K. to turn it on.

Don't you have relatives/friends in the UK, to send you an old or activated SIM card? Or don't you have your own old SIM cards?
We use our own old UK SIM card on an old mobile, with no problem. It's a Plusnet card for £6/month no contract, so we get free phone calls and texts to the UK.

Thanks Hartmill for the quickly dashed hopes!

And yes, ITexpert7, asking a relative in the UK is one route. I recently threw away a couple of old UK SIMs - hadn't used them in 3 years and couldn't see when I would need them again.

Also, I really want a true Pay as You Go card, topping up when needed. I've never understood this concept of pay an amount each month but not on contract - that is not pay as you go in my mind.

it will be used only 3-4 times a year for the bank to validate card payments linked to foreign exchange, so I'm loathe to commit to regular payments.

The bank says "Use our App" - just load it on to your phone and then validate the app by means of a one-time passcode sent to the exact PT-based phone they say is no longer secure. No one thinks things through any more.
