We have one of two FBI reports in hand and the other on the way. We're keeping them sealed.

Now for the apostille. Does anyone know if this can be handled at the state level? We have a sec of state office three blocks from our home that will do walk-in service for an apostille. That's how we got our banking docs done.

I fear that sending the FBI reports to the Federal government for the apostille will set our departure date back weeks.

Please offer advice or share what you did.

You do not need an Apostille for the FBI background checks if you leave them sealed. That is what we did.

It appears VFS in NY requires apostille but the other locations do not. Luckily we are going through SF so we do not need it either. But to answer the question, no it can't be done at the state level. It must be done in DC and can take weeks.

@gene are you applying from NY? I thought I read on VFS site you don't need it apostilled if you leave it unopened. I'm so confused. I have so many questions but VFS doesn't answer and then it disconnects.

Hi, yes I applied through VFS New York. As long as you don't open the envelope, you're fine. They open the envelope during your interview and stamp it. I'm happy to answer any other questions re: VFS New York. let me know.
