Extension of Long Stay Visa

Hello.

I hope someone here can help me. We arrived in Portugal after receiving our approval for a D7 visa. We received our Visas with SEF appointments. From what we were told at VFS the current visa (long stay visa) only allows for 2 entries into Portugal until we are able to get our residency card from SEF. Our Visa expires end of December and SEF appointment is only scheduled for end March. Is there a way to extend the long stay visas for the purpose of travelling out of the country until the SEF appointment? Or are we locked into Portugal until the residency card has been issued? The reason for travelling would be for business and we would be travelling between Portugal and our home country (South Africa).

Any help would be appreciated!

@jonesdn2020 With the current Portuguese issued visa, from my understanding I can enter the Schengen countries. Without it I would need a visa as South Africans need them in order to enter the EU. Hope that makes sense...?

We specifically did not leave Portugal once our D7 expired since our SEF appointment wasn't for another 6 weeks and we did not want to run into an issue.
