Hello all,

Our appointment in SEF for the 2 years visa, will be in April. We came to know that the address in the NIF cannot be changed until this visa is granted and the residency is issued.  We wonder if it is the same case in terms of the property lease contract, Can we actually sign and register a lease contract before the residency is granted?. We are a bit confused in terms of what we need to present during the SEF appointment. Thank you very much in anticipation for your support.

JC

We signed our lease prior to going to VFS and it was registered with finance.

yes you can sign a lease before gaining your residency permit. you only need a NIF and bank account for the lease. That is one of the main drawbacks of the D7, you have to sign a 1 year lease before you have even been granted residency...and should you not be granted it for whatever reason you then are stuck with a 1 year lease that you can't normally cancel until 4 months has passed, and you need to give 4 months notice at that point as well. (so 8 months total), unless you have an understanding landlord.

just curious, if your SEF appt is April then that would suggest you've had your VFS appt - so surely you had a 1yr lease at that stage?. Or are you not coming over on a D7 visa

Hi @blaze451, thank you very much for your reply.

For the VFS appointment (National Visa), a very close friend sponsored us regarding the accommodation and support, but now we found a place to lease. We read somewhere in the forum that for the SEF appointment, it is required to present the rental agreement and proof of that agreement from the tax authority website, so we asked ourselves if for this rental agreement it is ok to don’t have yet the residency.

@jcc Yes, it is OK. It should have your NIF in the lease and be registered on the Finance portal. Technically you could probably still use your friend's sponsorship, I think. You can also present a certificate from your local authority that you are a resident of the parish.
