We've done it.... we have a place in Central Portugal near Ferreira Do Zezere and are over the moon. For the next few years at least it will be our second home but hope that eventually will become our primary residence. But for the time being I need to continue earning money :-(. Our plans and hopes are that we will travel to and from Portugal/UK as many times as we can throughout the year only restricted by money and the 180day rule. We expected to rent a car for each trip (cheapest possible) for maybe years to come until the more permanent move but am already noticing the cost of renting might not be quite as frugal as we thought. Each trip is costing us between £400-£900 (2-3 weeks rental). But of course play that off against the high car costs, insurance etc that will go with that makes it one we are starting to look at. My ambition would be to buy one of those oft seen Toyota pickups (from the 80s) with the wooden back and find a place that it can be stored as cheaply as possible (no idea about this yet but hope that there is a cheap way for this to happen). Anyone gone down this route or willing to share their experiences with me that might help my research on this journey?

p.s Sorry for the rambling, hope it all makes sense.

Yes, it makes perfect sense. I was in a somewhat similar situation.

First of all, congrats on your home near Ferreira Do Zezere. We looked at homes in that region before looking farther north.

Buying a car in Portugal can be daunting. I have been trying to figure out how to do it myself. I would suggest reaching out to Gerry, who seems to have a fair amount of experience with car purchases in Portugal. He might be willing to offer you assistance in this area, but I don't want to speak for him.

Exciting days ahead for you. Best of luck!

Congrats on your new home! I am in exactly the same position, can’t be over permanently yet. We have always hired cars in the winter and it has been so cheap it was well worth doing.

However this year I had to go over in June for a month and the prices are so much higher, it getting into the tourist season. it made what should have been a cheap stay in my own house rather pricey.

So like you I am thinking about buying a car over there, I am okay as I have a carport it can live in. Not far from me (Algarve) I notice a company advertises caravan/motorhome storage so I guess those sorts of companies also would store a car? Might be some in your area?

I guess ideally you just need to find a nice new friend with a big drive who will let you park up when you aren’t there! Good luck finding a car, I haven’t got the energy to look into all that yet.

@aspidistra Thanks for your message. I have a garage and driveway so no issues with leaving it at home (Portugal), but as I am located in a very rural location about 1hr 30mins drive from the airport, getting to and from the airport is the challenge (outside of purchase/maintenance costs)

I'm the same boat. We recently purchased a house in the Algarve and don't plan to permanently move there from another 5 years or so. Until then, we plan to visit as often as possible (from the US). We have been renting on our recent trips but I expect to stay up to a month so I'm a little nervous about the costs, especially during high season. Our house is in the hills and we don't have a carport to protect from weather so we would have to store near Faro airport or find a friendly that we would compensate to park.

The car park we found near Faro charges about 1200/yr for a space and they pick up and drop off at the airport. Heading over to Portugal in a few weeks and going to do some more digging on options, so I'll keep an eye on this thread and update if I find anything interesting.

@chabu Thanks Chabu... Look forward to seeing what you find out. We are here every month now maybe missing one every so often, but all in all rental costs will slowly creep up so still looking at options and so although I am in central Portugal keen to see what you find.

@chabu Can I ask the name of that car park? That sounds like exactly what we're looking for too.

Any updates from those looking into this or others that have found a solution. I still cant find a cost effective solution and am now travelling every month so ownership argument is getting stronger.

Our garage is huge, and we will only have one car. Not sure if this might interest you or not.
