Hi

If all goes to plan I hope to get a D7 visa and move to Portugal in August/September on a D7 visa. I need to have good, or at least reasonable access to Lisbon Airport as I travel abroad at least 3 times a month, and wondering where I should look outside Lisbon.

I am thinking outside Lisbon in the hope I can save some costs on accommodation until I purchase a property. I suppose direct access to Oriente Station would be helpful as I initially may not have a car. Recommendations much appreciated.

You really need to clarify costs as they are highly subjective to different people.

We are in Lisbon just south of the airport. We live between the Alameda and Arroios metro stops. When we fly out of the Lisbon airport, we walk 5-10 minutes to the Alameda metro, and it takes us roughly 20 minutes on the metro before we are at the airport. Total cost for the two of us on the metro now is I think roughly €3 per journey. When we use Oriente for the bus or train it is a few stops before the airport so roughly a total of 20 minutes.

As @thomasribatejo stated we need to plan our airport, bus, and train times around the metro schedule or just use a rideshare like Bolt.

Our furnished T2 is €1,400 a month. We have no transportation costs unless we are feeling lazy and grab the metro so that costs us less than €20 a month for the two of us. Having everything we need within a short walk or quick metro ride has some value to us after being stuck in a remote town in the US during Covid.

@jonesdn2020 It just dawned on me that we stayed 2 minutes walk away from Arroios Station. In December we had a look at an apartment on Calçada Poço dos Mouros. A beautifully renovated T2 80m² apartment for sale at around EUR360,00.  Just the wrong timing for us and we should check out more areas of Lisbon. Coming from London of course, these prices look really good.

@prfhorn You were one street over from us. We are on R. Heróis de Quionga and love this area. Our favorite vegan and Mexican restaurants are on Calçada Poço dos Mouros and operate as FoodRiders in the same kitchen.

move to Portugal in August/September

I forgot to mention this time frame is right in the peak season and prices will be higher. Inventory will also be very low.

@jonesdn2020 Hi Thanks for the input. Regarding costs, my reasoning was that we would rather pay less in rent for 6 months or so to put more in to buying a property but of course, we also want to be comfortable so may have to accept that we pay whatever is needed. I haven't rented for 40 years and my current mortgage is EUR800/month. That's life!

The summer season was also in the back of my mind. Maybe we would have more like finding somewhere in September. If push comes to shove I might be able to stay with my brother in Aljezur using a 'term of responsibility'. Not idea for checking out Lisbon but maybe OK for the first few months.
