The closer I get to my prospective move, the more petrified I am becoming about moving alone to a new country.  If anyone can lend some ideas, support, assistance, I would be greatly appreciative.

@gilb For what it’s worth we’re right there too. We’re hopefully about 1 to 2 weeks max from visa approval and 8 weeks or so from being there and my wife and I both have moments of sheer terror. We also think that’s very natural (and have heard from others the same). We just keep telling ourselves it’s all worth it and we’ve promised to give ourselves at least 2 years to ‘settle in’ before we make any major decisions. One of the things I’ve been doing to help rationalize it is to just tell myself at worst it’s a long vacation abroad and there’s nothing stopping me from coming back if I need or want to.

@gilb Move to Porto and I can introduce you to 500 of my friends. Remember, it’s up to you to make friends. There are plenty of people here you can get to know, but you have to make the effort.

People here, in general, are a friendly lot. The ExPat community loves to embrace the newbies and welcome them into the community.

It’s a strange thing we do moving to another country and virtually all of us had help to make it happen. It’s only natural that people want to give back.

Just say hi!

You’re not alone, and you can do this.

@gilb Hi there!  Well done you for heading out on a great adventure.  You’ve got this!!  We just arrived a little over a month ago and so far we are loving it!!  What area of the country are you moving?

@gilb I hear ya! I just made my move to central PT a month ago. I sold everything I owned and left everything I have ever known and took the leap. It has certainly been challenging at times, but it has been amazing. I am fortunate enough to have my cat and dog with me, and a friend tagged along for moral support, which helped immensely in sorting things out. But there has always been someone to help when needed, and everyone has been beyond kind. Just remember to take things step by step. Things may work out differently than planned, but with perseverance and ingenuity, you can absolutely do it! If it gets to be too much along the way, let it go for the time being and come back to it later (and when in PT, have a nice glass of wine!). It will all be  worth it, and you will love it! A positive attitude, especially when challenged, will get you through. Wishing you all the best on your exciting journey! Try replacing the word ‘petrified’ with ‘excited’!

@gilb What area are you moving to? Definitely start now at making connections and having people to meet up with when you arrive.

@gilb For anyone who is coming, if you are near Porto and you want to get together, send me a PM or reply in this thread. Konni and I are happy to meet you for drinks or supper and help you to get plugged in.

Don’t worry, you’ll only be alone if you chose to be.

The Expat community here is fantastic and Expats Portugal is *the* place to reach out get started on your journey. Konni and I have more friends than we can count.

You can do this and you will be fine.

Konni and I came with the express goal to find out if we could fail. We were trying to fail. It never happened.

You will be fine and you can do this!

@hank_2021 Hi Hank! I’ll be in the Porto area June 9-13 if a meet-up is possible. I’m trying to see some friends on the 12th.

Where will you be living?  I just moved alone to Coimbra two weeks ago, would love to meet up if you’re coming to this area….but to be honest, bringing my dog with me made it SO much easier because everyone wants to talk to me to ask about my dog. I am never lonesome. Remember that there is a wealth of knowledge in the Expats Portugal community, reach out whenever you have questions.

You can do this.  Nothing says it has to be forever. Just treat it as the adventure that it is with an open mind.  Look for Facebook groups “Expats in (your city/area)” and you’ll find meetups anywhere from weekly to monthly. We’ve been here 1.5 years and have made some amazing friends. We’re in the Algarve. Not sure where you’ll land but it can be done. Focus on making some friends and ask questions in the groups for advice on how to get things done. We’ve all been through it and almost everyone is willing to share what they learned which makes your learning curve dramatically shorter.  Best of luck.
