they want me to list the dates of travel and have insurance before I get the visa and that does not make sense to me since I will not be able to plan the travel until I have the visa.

@gilb Most of us either used open ended airline tickets, temporary bookings that were cancelled, or mock bookings for the flights. We made the bookings for 90 days after the VFS appointment date and the return 120 days after that.

The travel insurance was more difficult back in the day and we had to pay for the policy to be in alignment with the air tickets. Check with Winsurance here in the business directory for current options.

I am not aware of a way around their requirement for travel bookings and insurance in approving the visa. We traveled immediately after VFS appointment and only returned when our D7 was approved, and our tourist visas were to expire. When we sent in our passports for the visa, they just asked for the new return flight if it had changed, which it had, and they stamped our visa with that start date.

@gilb This part is tricky. You have to give them the date you ideally want to move here, and it must be no later than 90 days after your appointment at VFS or embassy (depending on where you live). You should not buy a ticket for that specific date unless you plan to come here regardless of whether the visa is ready (many of us did, returning to pick up the visa as soon as it was available). You have to take a leap of faith that you will be approved; be as prepared as you possibly can using the forums, vendors, links, webinars, videos, online meetups, connections, consults, etc. available here.

You can print out a proposed travel itinerary from an airline site (I did), but sometimes they don’t even look at that.

Do not leave your passport(s), in case you need to travel; you can give them a notarized color copy of the pertinent pages.

There are a number of travel insurance options; Winsurance can advise you what you need for good rates and adjust the start date as needed.

Boa sorte!
