There ia  forum coming up on Thursday NIGHT REGARDING LICENSE EXCHANGE.

Just one point that will not be mentioned. In the Uk if you change your address, you must notify the DVLA, that is a legal requirement. If you change it to a PT address, then clearly you are not a a UK resident . a therefore are not entitled to a UK license. No License while driving , no insurance!. In Pt You can drive on a UK license provided you have informed the IMT , but if the license is not legal by BRITISH LAW, is it legal in PT.

@paulr I’ve literally given up.

I was all for just exchanging my license for a Portuguese one and tried that process.  Big mistake.  So, filled in all the forms, got the psychiatric report etc and submitted the forms etc etc

9 month later, I received an email saying I had an appointment at the IMT in Faro…in 2 days time, so, I went.  …and for the certificate of authentication, they asked me for the original certificate…..that the DVLA only issue in digital form.  The IMT office is literally the 3rd world, they cram as many folk in as possible and have about 3 people working.

Now I have the added ballache as I moved and need to change the Certificado de Matricula for the car and honestly, I’m about spent with Portugal.  Its a 3rd world territory in Europe.

I don’t think that is correct. From the DVLA site-

If you’re moving abroad

You cannot register your new address on your British driving licence. Contact the driving licence authority in your new country of residence.

No mention of it becoming invalid. Also they posted on X stating the same –

1

Again no mention that it will become invalid.

They also reached an agreement recently with Portugal allowing UK users to drive on their licence until it expires….again why would they say this if it was not valid.

I have tried to register my UK driving license since becoming a resident, but the link on the IMT just takes me to the page to exchange my driving license. I have emailed IMT but there is no reply. Any advise?

Also, my UK driving license expires next year. Should I renew my UK driving license and then exchange to a portuguese license, or just just begin my process of exchanging my UK license?

Is it worthwhile joining the ACP to help with this.

Thanks for your  help.

@antonio_f thank you for your help and response. This link takes me to a page to exchange. I don’t want to do that, I just want to register my license

@antonio_f that is not relevant to UK though, it states it is for European union issues licences which UK is no longer part of.

The UK gov site states-

Registering your UK or Gibraltar driving licence

To continue driving in Portugal on your current licence as a resident, you must register your driving licence with the IMT. This should normally be done within 60 days of the issue date on your residence certificate, or immediately if you have already been in Portugal for more than 60 days. At present, however, IMT’s database does not allow for the registration of some foreign licences, including from the UK and Gibraltar.  When the system becomes operational, we will update this page

@blaze451 thanks blaze. So it looks like I am fine to drive on my current UK license.

So, all I need to do is exchange my license within two years of becoming a resident?

@westy_t no you can use your uk licence until it expires, the 2 year refers to expired licence exchanges not valid ones.

A new bilateral agreement between the UK and Portugal means you can drive in Portugal on your current licence until it expires at which point you will need to exchange it

@westy_t I just noticed you mentioned yours expires in a year. Therefore you prob want to exchange it now as it can take that long to get your new Portuguese one. Otherwise you could end up with an expired licence and unable to drive until you receive your portuguese one. You wont be able to renew the UK one with the UK as you no longer reside there.

@blaze451 thanks I agree. It expires in October 2025 so I will begin the process now. So do you think I can do this alone, or I can see some people use the AMT (portugal driving club???)

@Martin  I believe thats to renew a PT license not change a None PT license.  I did mine through a Driving school rather than Internet /trip to Faro. But mine was a renewal + medical. Just gave the original medical cert and the license came to my address immediately my old license ran out.

Interesting, a shame we can’t just use our uk license.

Did you have to hand in your uk license, or did you keep both Portuguese and UK?

@westy_t No, the PT DL replaces the UK one, so you’ll probably have to handover your UK one, receive a paper replacement (valid only in Portugal) until the new PT one arrives.
