Hello all!

My name is John and I am researching moving to Portugal with my husband and beagle. We are currently in the research phase and figuring out what areas/cities will be on our initial scouting trip. From my research and recommendations, we have the following as potential places to visit: Coimbra, Evora, Lisbon, Guimaraes, Braganca, and Algarve.

We are looking for:

  • A safe community (although I’m thinking that anywhere in Portugal is safer than the United States at this point)
  • A stand-alone single family structure with enough land to do some gardening for both flowers and edibles
  • A home that is move-in ready. We don’t want to get a fixer-upper and find there is no available contractors.
  • A community that is within one hour or less from major hospitals and medical services.
  • An inland community to avoid summer beach tourists and possibly avoid bad coastal weather.
  • Close to good food markets/supermarkets

Any feedback would be appreciated and I’m looking forward to exploring more of this website and Portugal.

Have a great day,

John

Happy to help. We are hitting the road for three weeks so I will be delayed in responding. We have lived in Lisbon for the past 2 plus years and love it here. We are however ready to chill on the beach and are moving to Vila Real de Santo Antonio this September.

I would say the coastal weather seems to be the best. Inland Portugal can be very hot everywhere in the summer.

We have loved the Lisbon healthcare access and I imagine Porto is the same.

Getting some land is going to put you on the outskirts but maybe look at Sintra for an example. It is close to Lisbon and provides many items on your checklist.

You will have a hard time in Portugal finding anything that doesn’t need work as far as housing unless it is new or currently remodeled. Just like in the US that still is no guarantee.

Hi, and welcome to the forum from me.

Whilst, in my opinion, absolutely anywhere in Portugal is great for visiting, if you’re specifically looking for relocation spots with your particular interests & requirements uppermost in mind, I would be inclined to cross off Algarve, Evora & Lisbon on climate grounds alone (ie without even considering other drawbacks which I could mention) and Bragança because it’s a bit remote and without other significant population centres within easy reach.

On the assumption that the gardening / growing is of major importance to you then, I’d be looking at concentrating on the districts of Coimbra, Braga and Viana do Castelo, the last of which I know particularly well, and possibly Viseu. All of those would have the facilities you want, providing you don’t head for their remotest parts, and are well-enough connected to other cities and to 1 or more airports.

If you’re looking to provide significantly for yourselves, own reliable water supply is an absolute must. Don’t take anybody’s word for it that mains water is cheap / adequate enough for a flourishing veg plot.

@x-camone, thanks so much for the great information. I was already looking into Coimbra and Braga as potential destination. Will add Viano do Castelo and Viseu!

Thanks again,

John
