My husband and I moved to Portugal in March 2020 just as the pandemic ramped up. We’re a British-American couple who were looking for the country life after years in cities. After several months exploring (both in and out of lockdowns), including 2 months on the coast by Baleal and 5 months in Redondo in the Alentejo, we finally settled in Estremoz. Estremoz is in the central Alentejo, bustling on weekends with the huge antiques and food market, and calm during the week. Our region’s capital is Évora, 35m drive which is more famous, while Lisbon is 1.5hrs direct motorway. We’re lucky to be able to get the city of Badajoz in Spain in only 45m too.

We fill our days by renovating apartments and houses, finding abandoned places and doing a total renewal. We use a mix of builders and our own labour, and find it to be a wonderful creative outlet. We’re currently renovating our 3rd, 4th and 5th (yes, I know, we’re tired!). We started in London where we lived up to 2014 (and where we learned to renovate), lived in Madrid for a few years, and then spent several years travelling in different countries. We are now very happy to have finally put down roots in Estremoz. I am also a horse instructor and trainer, and this is actually one reason we moved here: Portugal is a horsey country! We also picked this region for the sun (so much blue sky!) and to feel like we are truly in Portugal (rather than the big cities or the Algarve). We still love cities, but after many years we felt like a change and wanted some fresh air (literally). We absolutely love it here, great food, great wine, great weather, just great.

Thank you to the admin Gerry for permission to also mention: we have a spacious T2+2 apartment in the town of Estremoz, renovated in 2022, and available for annual rental from 1st July. It’s just 5 minutes’ walk into town, to the castle and to vineyards. Estremoz is a stunning market town covered in marble, dozens of restaurants and a huge Saturday market. The reasons we chose to settle here! All our rentals come with Relocation Support where we help to smooth the move to Portugal, as it’s a lot to do and take in all at once (D7 visa applications, right?!). DM or comment if you’re interested now or in the future (as we have the other renovations in process too).

We have moved a few times internationally so know the bureaucracy can be a chore, but want to reassure everyone that although the wheels can turn slowly, they do turn! It’s all about expectations, and it will be worth it in the end. Portugal is a beautiful country and the friendliness and welcome you will receive make it a great place to live, work or retire. It’s fun reading everyone’s intros, coming from all over the world.

A warm welcome to all moving to Portugal, and come see us in Estremoz! – Elizabeth & Vientiene

FYI although the above apartment is now rented, we have other newly renovated properties in Estremoz (Évora, Alentejo) available for rent in the next few months, ideal for the D7 visa, and including relocation support. Our properties also become available on an ongoing basis so please DM at any time for more info – obrigada!
