Apologies for starting another thread on this topic but I couldn’t find the one that I had previously replied to.

Our request for automatic renewal was successfully submitted today! This was done by Ei on our behalf. We contacted them about a month ago when we got tired of trying to keep up with the renewal situation ourselves. We have received a request for payment from AIMA which should hopefully complete the process. Our address was updated at the same time so we should get the cards delivered to the right place.

For those of you who have residency cards that are expiring soon, or that have already expired, it’s worth logging into the SEF portal to see if automatic renewal is now available for you. Our current cards are due to expire on June 6th.

My wifes auto renewal went active today also. Her card expired on the 4th April.

It took less than a minute to submit and recieve an email for payment. Now need to wait a couple days for the payment reference to activate

@aref Hi Aref, let me ask. Did you submit the required documents such as criminal record, residential evidence, tax payment receipt, etc? You have done on SEF portal or AIMA portal?

@grudgij Congrats on your success!

So, let me confirm, the SEF portal you mentioned is, “Renovação automática” and you type Número do Título de Residência for AUTENTICAÇÃO, correct?

I get the message, O título de residência que possui não permite a utilização da funcionalidade “renovação automática”. It seems I have to contact the indicated numbers.

The expiry of my card is August. Is it too early? That’s the message??

Hi Kay,

My wife Jan’s card expired and it was at least a couple of months before the web site became “active” and I was able to order and pay for her renewal (it’s not our first rodeo).

She went abroad (oops), I’d been trying for some time to get past exactly the message you describe.  Normally, if you apply for the renewal more than a month out before expiry you will get that message and all the times I was trying up to and beyond Jan’s expiry date I was getting that same message.  It just means they are not accepting automatic renewals for you right now.

Luckily just before I was leaving to go abroad for work, I decided to try again and I guess they caught up to where Jan was in the queue and I went ahead with the order and payment (which you can’t do right away, so give it a day or two and you will be able to pay).  I emailed Jan all the screen shots and payments for the renewal in case she needed that when coming back into Portugal with her fingers crossed.

For Jan, returning to Portugal, there was an extension due to the delays for people trying to get their card renewed.  I don’t know if that is still the case or not.  She returned briefly to Portugal at Porto Airport and she showed her card and began explaining but the staff knew of the extension and so no big deal.  Then she had to go to Australia and I met her there and upon return a second time we came through Switzerland and I showed my card and they said to Jan, have you got one to and she said mines expired and they looked at the card and said that’s OK?  We don’t know if that meant they could see something in the system or not.

Eventually we received her card and all good.

Sorry for the long story, maybe it will help others to see how it went for us.  It was very frustrating as Jan did need to leave Portugal and some advice said Jan should not.

@richar4260 She came back with an expired card thru Switzerland???? That’s amazing.  Did they ask you if that was ok? I didn’t get that. How long were you outside Portugal the second time?

@moa She was with me and mine was valid but she was nervous.  They said have you got your card too? Jan replied My cards expired.  They said that’s OK and took her card and put it through system and gave it back to her. We were down there for about two and a half months.  We had paid for Jan’s renewal by then but of course did not have the card yet.   We went via Switzerland specifically as we didn’t have to do control in Porto.  That’s not advice, just what we thought would be the best way about it.

@richar4260 Thank you for clarifying. Switzerland is by far one if not the toughest boarder control there is. They’re very meticulous. You avoided Porto on purpose, but I would have been more afraid of the Swiss instead. It might prove that the  card validity is expired but not the actual residency permit. Perhaps.

Hi Richar4260,

Thank you so much for your detailed message! And it is nice you and Jan got back to Portugal without a problem after traveling to a variety of destinations. It is hard to take a risk to go abroad with the expired card, but maybe the officers at the borders share the information in the system. (Because people have to travel abroad sometimes for the inevitable reasons!)  OK, I will keep watching. Your story gave me hope:)

@prod Hi Prod, so your card already expired and you can’t open your account on SEF portal? I can imagine your frustration… Honestly I have no idea, as I could at least open it, but just was rejected for auto renewal…

@prod Try longing in in Portuguese.  I found that worked for me when I was having trouble,  once I was in properly I could use translate again.  That was on my PC.

Hi Richar4260,

Good advice! I will log in to the Portuguese site, when the chance comes. That is pretty reasonable:)

@kay_lisbon I think it’s probably too early for August renewals. We were getting that same message earlier in the year.

@grudgij thank you, and did you submit any required documents such as criminal record, residential evidence, tax payment receipt, etc? Have you done by SEF portal, not AIMA portal, right?

@kay_lisbon There’s no supporting documents requested as part of automatic renewal. You do have the opportunity to update your address if you have moved since the initial residence card was issued but you don’t need to provide any document to verify the new address.

And, yes, the automatic renewals are still through the SEF website.

@kay_lisbon Yes, it’s too early. I heard they were processing cards including July but not beyond yet. Indeed, that error message is standard as I have tried to “renew” just to see as mine expires  within a year and I get the same  wording that you cited. It’s simply too early.
