Did you already have your AIMA residency appointment?

Ei! (my attorneys) helped to change my fiscal address from my US address to my Lisbon apartment’s address this past week. I don’t have my residency permit yet and my residency appointment isn’t until January 25, 2024.

The documents I gave that they said were required to change my fiscal address in my NIF portal were a copy of my passport, a copy of my approved D7 visa (I was approved in October), my AIMA residency appointment confirmation (from the link that is printed on my visa), and a copy of my apartment lease contract (registered with Finanças). I had to sign a power of attorney for them to act on my behalf, since they had to go in person to a local Finanças/AT office during this end-of-the-year/holiday time to present the documents to change the address on my behalf. My change is official from December 28. It was all so close to deadline, since I didn’t get my apartment lease registered until about two weeks ago. I plan on applying for NHR myself in my NIF portal (using Bordr.io’s instructions) next month, but I know I have until March 31, 2024 to apply for the 2023 tax year.

I do technically fall into the second category for the transitory NHR regime into 2024 (from Gerry’s original post), but with all of the changes with the government, election, etc., I decided to get it done in 2023. Of course, that means I’ll only get nine full years of NHR status, but that certainty is better than nothing at all.

You can apply right away to get the NHR since you’re already have a Portuguese address. It’s very simple. I wouldn’t wait for the same reason that you rushed to get your address changed (and spent some serous cash).

Thank you very much for the info. From what we know thus far, a change of address is only possible with a documentation of visa approval, not visa application. In addition to the other papers you mentioned. If anyone knows of someone being approved (for address change) with proof of visa application, please post it. Thanks again.

Yes, thanks for the reminder. I just submitted my application for NHR (following the steps under the Bordr page below for anyone who’s interested). It was very quick and easy. I downloaded my application confirmation (under step 3). I will come back after 1-2 business days (January 2 or 3) to download the NHR registration (after it is processed successfully) under step 4.

Back in the day, Daniel Dos Reís, the lawyer, said that changing one’s address at Finanças only asked for one’s intention to pay taxes in Portugal. Then Finanças started to complicate things and you’re correct, as of now they haven’t done it by solely applying for a Visa. But if they could do it before, they certainly can do it now.

Today’s news is that Tax Authority (AT) is refusing upfront all NHR requests in their website, because their systems can’t support it. However, in their refusal message, they request the sending of the necessary document(s) that will allow the person to receive their (transitional) NHR status, to be then processed by AT.
