Hi all. I live near Alcobaca on the Silver Coast. Looking to connect with others in the area. I’m an animal person, living on a small quinta in a tiny aldea. I’ve been in Portugal well over a year, am working on my Portuguese, and would love to find people to get out and do stuff with. Tchau!

Welcome to the forum @janab.

There are several members living in that area, and a weekly meeting taking place in the region.

Not certain where you are but we are in Santa Cruz (in fact, just moved into our home this evening as we await our household goods from the USA). We have two dogs (a 4-year old Golden Retriever and a 13-year Louisiana Catahoula rescue). If we’re in close proximity we’d be happy to meet. Antonio, where is there a weekly meeting place? When and where?

@janab

Bem vindo! We have just bought our house between Caldas da Rainha and Rio Maior and will be moving in mid July. We have a small holding too and a Labrador who will just love the open spaces!

I am v keen to get my Portugeuse up to scratch. Posso falar um pouco da língua agora mas não sou tão confortável como desejo ser. I would be happy to be a part of any silver coast expat group if I knew where they met, how often and when.

Thanks

Roz

@rozdd Hi Roz,

Likewise – my Portuguese needs work! I do run a Sunday zoom group where we practice and also talk logistics, resources and other stuff. Happy to have you join if you’re interested – just let me know. I have friends in Caldas so am out that way frequently, and have a great vet in Caldas (or two, actually) if you need recommendations. Hoping to start learning to kayak on the lagoa soon, since I just bought a kayak.

I know there are expat groups that meet in Sao Martinho and also in Alcobaca, but for me it’s a bit intimidating – I’m older, don’t hear great in big groups, and also am a bit shy. I’d much rather meet a couple people for coffee than walk into a huge crowd of strangers! That being said, almost everyone I’ve met here is nice, and I have made a few friends along the way.

Let me know if you’re up for a coffee or anything – I’d love to connect!

Tchau,

Jana

@gardi Looks like Santa Cruz is south of Bombarral, so a ways down, but I’m always up for some exploring! Google says it’s about an hour from me, so maybe we could get together for lunch one day? I’m happy to make the drive and explore a new area.

If you haven’t been, the Buddha Eden in Bombarral is amazing! I could live there :).

I love dogs. I don’t have any right now because I have a neighbor’s sheep on my property most of the time, and outdoor cats in addition to the one that I brought with me. It’s become a nice little family of critters.

Very useful map.  Is this maintained somewhere on the Forum?

@janab Apologies for the tardy response Jana. We have finally moved in to our new home in Santa Cruz but our shipper just adjusted the delivery date for our household goods from America for the 4th time. So our house is rather spartan but yes would be happy to meet for coffee or lunch. My personal email is ltcjose@sapo.pt And yes, my wife and I brought two dogs over here (our 5 year old Golden and our 13 year old Louisiana Catahoula) and they’ve both acclimated nicely.

@gardi I remember about the shipping. I shipped a container, had to change my outbound flights (and all pet certificate appointments, which were impossible to get right then!) 4 times, and my inbound was also crazy because the movers didn’t give me their inventory list for the Cert. of Baggage until a week before it was due to dock, and their process made my inventory… wrong. So I had to hand-carry the Certificate on the day of docking to Lisbon. It was a bit crazy, all for no good reason. I think I hit nearly every possible hiccup in my move, including a nightmare rental I couldn’t WAIT to get out of. So… I feel your shipping pain! lol. I think all of us come away from a move like this with stories – I know I have. Glad the dogs are settling in. I think cats are by nature less adaptable, but mine were older when I moved too. Miz is 17 now.

So is Gardi your real name or username? I’ll shoot you an email in a bit with my contact.
